I designed my website for my portfolio with the look of Flash but utlizing HTML. I have been getting a good response (i.e. page visits) but I have noticed the pages viewed per visit are rather small. Considering this is a portfolio site the more pages visited the better, I would think? So ignoring content likes, dislikes what I am asking is have I created a site that is too difficult to navigate? Are all the buttons easy to understand, use etc..... Any advice, critiques or comments are welcome(constructive please!) Thanks. Here is my site: http://www.markhonschke.com

Bus Stop is ready for the mold(well....almost still need some input from Bruno), just need to extend the sign post and add a chunk of concrete block to the end. Love to hear you opinions.....

More of the fish by artist Rich Werner (check out his other work), I am doing these as bas relief and plan to cast a couple in plaster and vacuum form a few more. Still some work to do on the two but teeth just needs some smoothing. Crits and comments welcome.

I wanted to challenge myself to interpret a very graphic character into 3D. I ran across a great pic of a fish on Rich Werner's Blog (local Seattle concept artist) Its still a work in progress so there are still some details to fix and finish.

Rivets and Dead Fish

Im not sure I have ever updated my blog this fast but here is a quick update. I added rivets and now beside the sanding and finishing I have dead fish and the base to finish(not to forget the molding and casting of the prop and hatch wheel, but thats minor). Should be ready for paint in less than two weeks.

Not sure if I have ever updated my blog this fast but every major part is is done now its just a matter of details. Sub panels and rivets are all that are left and then the sub is on to the mold. Let me know what you think...

USS Glub Nearing Launch Date

Another sub update! I finished molding and casting the arms and all I have left is the rear hatch and the prop. Sorry the pics are a little bright and hide some of the arm claw details but the next update will show more as they arms will have a coat of primer on them. I can’t wait to get paint on this…..! I am quickly pulling these projects together as my school has an alumni show coming up this summer. That coupled with the fact that I am neither moving nor having a baby this year means I can actually get some of the long gestating side projects finished……….ya me!

A Little More...

Oh so agonizingly slow(too many distractions three kids two jobs etc blah blah blah) but here is a little progress on the USS Glub.... I molded and cast the head, finished an arm(actuator is missing in the pic but its done) I will mold and cast the second arm later this week. I modeled, molded and cast the actuator arm boots(bright white piece on the sub). If my schedule holds out I should have this done in time for my funeral or the end of the Earth....;)

Ben Caldwell Speed Character Study

With Tim Bruckners awesome character study work for inspiration(seen here) I have set out to do some studies of my own to further my technique and speed up my sculpting. With that in my mind I set some ground rules for myself.......1.One a week 2.Four hour time limit 3.Work from a drawing or picture.

Here is the first example........

As I limited my time to four hours, there are some differences between the drawing and the sculpt that I would go back and fix. Eye shape, jowls and head shape etc.... but my rule is four hours and so I stopped. Love to know what you guys(and gals) think. Thanks

If you havent seen Ben Caldwells work check it out in this book, it is great drawing and cartooning reference that works great for sculptors.

A very talented sculptor by the name of Tim Bruckner has been posting some character studies on the sculpting forum. You can check out a sample here, I was under the impression he was spending about an hour on them so I wanted to challenge myself to see what I could do in an hour and a half. Here is the result and the reference work.

A New Post Finally

It has taken me awhile but I finally made some movement on the sculptures. In the interim I have been starting a toy company with a friend and that has been occupying a good portion of my time. No excuse but here it is......I present the finished Capt of the USS Glub. I will be molding and casting him this week and the sub should quickly follow.

Almost finished with this sculpt but it got put aside for a bit because I am finishing up the other two sculpts. This piece was inspired by Andy Bergholtz three pirate busts here. (checkout the other two in his gallery) My plan is to do three cowboy busts with two desperadoes and their gang leader. Stinkeye is one of the side kicks with Skinny Pete and Black Bart yet to come. I still have to add some hair, accessories(pistols etc...) and put the finishing touches then its in to the mold. Thought........quips.......etc.....?

Small Sub Update

Added rivets around the canopy and the nose bubble with the trim. The tail is ready for molding and the first arm just needs the joint and actuator. The second arms pieces are done just need to be assembled. I am not sure about the thickness on the hands, I am very close to the original art but I am not sure if it looks in scale.....what do you think?

Escape Update

Finally an update to "Escape", now I just need to finish the hands and cell. Been flipping back and forth between this and the sub. Unfortunately he sat in the oven a few minutes too long but it shouldnt effect the final result. I had to make some changes to the face, I added some length and moved one of the eyes(its amazing what you can do when you have a pair of calipers) but in the end it made a big difference. I feel I finally captured the look of the original character.

One of my favorite artists, Guy Francis, takes part in Illustration Friday(if you dont what this is see my links) on a regular basis and I find myself laughing out loud every week he posts. His drawings have such great character and subtle emotion that interpreting them in 3D can be a challenge(the fun part) With his permission I started work on what I hope will be a series of figs. Here is the original art.......

I love the challenge of taking very two dimensional characters and interpreting them in 3 dimensions. These two sculpts are a few years old but I wanted them on the blog. Based on work by an artist from the UK(Dave Kurtz-Williams) these two were hard modeled in urethane foam.

I have drawn since I was young and sculpted and on and off for close to ten years now, and have found myself not being as productive as I would like. As such I am starting this blog to push my productivity and showcase my work. I am a model maker by trade and am currently working for a school in Seattle supervising a student shop.
